What Lyme and tick-borne illnesses can impact my body?
Lyme disease is an infection resulting from the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. It is usually transmitted to humans through bites from infected black-legged ticks (also known as deer ticks). It can cause chronic problems and a wide range of symptoms, making it difficult to pinpoint the cause of health issues. This is why it is incredibly important that patients with new symptoms after tick bites should be diligent about visiting a professional for an evaluation to get a definitive diagnosis.
What are some of the more common symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses?
There are several symptoms that can occur after a tick bite. While you may have a red bump where the tick had attached, it doesn’t mean you have a disease. However, if you notice specific symptoms following the tick bite within a few weeks of the initial contact, it is critical that you visit a doctor. Some of the more common signs of Lyme and tick-borne diseases and illnesses include:
- Flu-like symptoms including chills, muscle aches, and high fever
- Tender and swollen lymph nodes near the bite
- A bull’s eye rash (shows up in about 20% of cases)
- Joint pain
- Brain fog and memory issues
- Headaches and dizziness
If Lyme disease is left undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to chronic problems, including neurological issues, impaired muscle movement, irregular heartbeat, and arthritis.
