End sleepless nights with the help of our team with a diagnosis of insomnia

We’ve all had it happen at one time or another: we toss and turn all night in bed, just waiting for morning to come. But individuals who deal with this problem, known as insomnia, on a regular basis want to find a solution to their sleepless nights. Drs Robert Kachko, Paul Epstein, and Veena Verma-Dzik in Stamford, Connecticut, at the Connective Center for Integrative Medicine can help. They can get you a proper diagnosis of insomnia and then work with you to find the cause–and treatment–that works for you!

What causes insomnia?

There are three primary types of insomnia, including:

  • Acute
  • Intermittent
  • Chronic

While many individuals with acute insomnia are responding to higher-than-normal levels of stress due to short-term situations in their lives, intermittent and chronic insomnia may have some underlying causes. Below are just some of the risk factors that can contribute to more long-term problems with insomnia:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Certain medications
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Inactivity/sedentary lifestyles
  • Increased levels of long-term stress
  • Improper night-time habits (“sleep hygiene”)

To get a proper diagnosis of insomnia, the Connecticut Center for Integrative Medicine team starts by getting a clear picture of your overall health and wellness. We get to know you better before performing several different diagnostic tests, including blood work.

What are the treatments for insomnia?

What is insomnia?

Hi, this is Dr. Robert Kachko, and I am here to talk all about insomnia or troubled sleeping.

For some people, that might include difficulty falling asleep. For others, it might mean difficulty staying asleep.

For others still, it might mean a problematic quality of sleep, or they’re not getting the deep levels of sleep they need to rest and recover fully.

The body needs sleep to recover from any chronic challenge, and poor sleep can become a bit of a vicious cycle.

What are the complications insomnia will cause?

Poor sleep impacts many things, including anxiety, chronic pain, digestive disorders, and metabolic disorders.

For example, sleeping just five hours a night for one week can increase a person’s chance of being diabetic many times. The same poor sleep can both contribute to pain and result from pain.

How does NY Center for Integrative Medicine determine treatments for insomnia?

It always starts with your medical history when we consider a thorough assessment.

It starts with getting a sense of why you’re sleeping poorly and how you’ve been sleeping throughout your life.

Once we get an idea of what that story looks like, we then do additional testing to assess nutrient deficiencies and hormone imbalances.

Insomnia can affect not only your sleep patterns but life in general. Book a consultation with us today.

What are the causes of insomnia?

One hormone, in particular, that could play a huge role when it comes to insomnia is Cortisol. Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone.

If it is not Increasing at the correct times of the day, specifically if it’s too high in the middle of the night, it can be challenging to have a restful sleep because the body senses that it’s always under stress.

Alongside Cortisol we also have to consider the health of the autonomic nervous system.

We can test this in-office with our Cardio ANS and Wavi testing to get a sense if the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of your nervous system can transition you into a restful, calm, restorative sleep.

What are the treatment options available for insomnia?

Once we’ve done a thorough, comprehensive assessment, we have to consider how to help you sleep better.

That almost always starts with sleep hygiene training based on principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Next, we consider nutrition and lifestyle. We use calming nutraceuticals and botanicals, sometimes alongside prescription medications.

Sometimes instead of prescription medications, we use acupuncture, a beautiful tool to help people relax and transition into a restful sleep.

We use mind-body medicine techniques like hypnotherapy and biofeedback. We use IV nutrient therapy to give your body a high dose of calming nutrients that can help your brain relax and transition into a restful sleep.

Sometimes we prescribe medications as a last resort and usually for as little time as possible to help you break the cycle of poor sleep.

Insomnia can affect not only your sleep patterns but life in general. Book a consultation with us today.
