The American Association of Sleep Medicine reports that 30% of adults have symptoms of insomnia. Ten percent of those adults have severe symptoms that affect their waking hours. Since sleep is so imperative to every aspect of our lives and health, partnering with a skilled, integrative insomnia therapist or provider is essential. At the Connecticut Center for Integrative Medicine, our team in Stamford wakes patients up to the many possibilities for effective treatment to achieve restorative sleep. We do not limit ourselves to conventional medicine or traditional practices. We leverage the very best from both worlds to support one’s overall health and well-being.
When you are an insomniac, you may have a hard time falling asleep. You may also have difficulties staying that way. There may be frequent awakenings, and you tend to wake up too early and not be able to fall asleep again. So, the sleep you get is often of a very poor quality. Now, when “acute” insomnia occurs at least three times per week for a minimum of three months, it is deemed “chronic” insomnia. Fewer than 10% of insomniacs have the chronic form of this condition.
Yes – for your mental clarity, emotional well-being, and systemic health. Persistent, untreated sleeplessness is associated with all sorts of effects and complications. These include chronic fatigue, mood imbalances, poor performance at work and school, increased risk of on-the-job injuries or car accidents, GI distress, anxiety and depression, tension headaches, and cognitive impairment. If you have comorbidities, a lack of quality sleep can also make existing hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other medical conditions worse.
As with all conditions managed at our center in Stamford, we must first understand the underlying cause of your persistent sleep challenges. Our providers simply cannot treat what they do not understand. So, we have naturally prioritized a range of assessments, testing, and diagnostic tools. Integrative providers are known for their substantive initial evaluations. In fact, during the first visit, we encourage patients to set aside at least 90 minutes. We do not rush getting to know you and your needs. Depending on what we find, your insomnia may be deemed primary (not connected to existing medical, psychiatric, or environmental sources) or secondary to other factors/conditions (associated with medical or mental illnesses and other sleep disorders). The best course of action depends on your diagnosis and the nature of your sleep disturbances.
Depending on your unique needs, we may address microbiome imbalances with clinical nutrition, such as probiotics. When hormones are implicated, we may introduce nutraceuticals. For any emotional or psychological investment, behavioral medicine may be in order. Patients have had great success with mindfulness, breathing techniques, and acupuncture. Remember, there is no silver bullet when resolving wide-ranging, whole-body challenges. Often, we combine lifestyle-oriented recommendations with optimized diets, environmental modifications, enhanced sleep hygiene, and our range of clinical products and mind-body medicine.
Your best sleep awaits. Call (866) 320-6402 to schedule your consultation today.
